Portugal. The Man: Night Out & The Masonic Temple Detroit

Accessibility Auditing & Coordination (2022)

Portugal. The Man. is an Alaskan origin band with serious dedication to activism and philanthropy particularly around Indigenous Sovereignty and Disability Justice. The band, along with AEG and Ten Fifty Entertainment worked to raise awareness of the overwhelming access barriers that many disabled people experience attending live music events through their “Night Out” program. Disabled contestants were awarded a pair of tickets for select concert locations and provided transportation, concierge services to navigate the venue, band access, and merchandise of their choosing.

During their 2022 Detroit show at the world’s largest Masonic Temple, Ani provided accessibility coordination for the winner who was able to attend and enjoy their very first concert due to this individualized access the program provided. Ani worked with local Masonic Temple staff and operators to amplify their understanding of the accessibility features of the venue, and produced a written accessibility audit to help them advocate with venue owners and operating leadership for improved accessibility for long term strategy.

In 2023, The Masonic Temple Detroit made significant improvements to their accessible entrance and accessibility information published online as a direct result of this audit work.
